The Emotions of Money: Happiness

My sons are teenagers now. But when they were younger, each year we would wait for the school year to end in March. And we would go off to Goa.

For almost 10 years, we went every year — same resort, same destination, and even the same routine. Start with a big breakfast by the sea — juices, croissants, donuts and cereals. Then off to the pool till lunch. Beer for me and cold coffees and french fries for the boys — swimming makes you hungry, doesn’t it? Then a nap after lunch and a walk on the beach in the evening.

I have so many photos and videos from those times. They’re my equivalent of ‘priceless’ in the famous Mastercard ad.

In the early years, those holidays felt extravagant. Each year, before booking the holiday, we would wonder if we should just save the money. With the wisdom of hindsight, however, it’s clearer than ever that those holidays were the best use of our money.

Money may not buy happiness. But it can buy experiences that will bring you joy far into the future. Sometimes, money can even buy you things that make you happy. But not always — that fifth pair of jeans is quite joyless.

I have many plans for my money: an extravagant milestone birthday; an expensive getaway anniversary. I plan on using it to bring joy to my family and friends.

Do you have such plans? Or, are they just hopes and dreams? Hope is not a plan. Speak to a financial professional who can help you plan the numbers for that big celebration.

Good luck!
